McAllen generated nearly $4.9 billion in retail sales to Mexican citizens in 2023 — 28.2 percent of its total local retail trade — a figure that reflects not population size but the city’s direct proximity to Monterrey, Mexico’s second-largest city by population and second richest by wealth. No other U.S. border metro approaches that ratio.
The Dallas Fed’s 2026 analysis of the McAllen–Edinburg–Mission MSA puts the structural case plainly: retail trade accounted for 54 percent of McAllen’s gross sales in 2023, against roughly 23 percent statewide. That 31-point gap is not seasonal. It is the structural signature of a border economy where a large share of transactions is driven by buyers from across the border — specifically the high-net-worth population of Monterrey, Mexico’s second-largest city by population and second richest by wealth concentration.
El Paso, the next-largest cross-border retail city in Texas, exported $803 million to Mexican shoppers in 2023. Laredo exported $644 million. McAllen’s figure of nearly $4.9 billion — representing 28.2 percent of its total local retail trade — does not reflect greater population. It reflects the direct geographic relationship with Monterrey’s affluent consumer base, which the Dallas Fed identifies as the structural driver.
The Hidalgo Port of Entry processed $44.6 billion in cross-border trade in 2024, according to TxDOT’s Rio Grande Valley Border Crossing Fact Sheet published in March 2025. These are personal-vehicle crossings, not container freight — the movement channel directly relevant to high-net-worth individuals carrying assets between jurisdictions.
Per the McAllen Economic Development Corporation, 4.8 million vehicles and 9.8 million passengers crossed from Mexico into McAllen in a single recent year. The Rio Grande Valley’s five land ports combined processed 12.4 million northbound passenger vehicles in 2024. Within Hidalgo County, the Pharr International Bridge — the only full-service commercial crossing in the county — ranks third nationally for U.S.–Mexico trade volume and first in the nation for produce crossings.
The McAllen–Edinburg–Mission MSA posted GDP of $30.2 billion in 2023, up from $23.0 billion in 2019 — a 31 percent increase over four years, per U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis data. McAllen Miller International Airport handled 1,206,320 passengers in 2024, the highest total in the Rio Grande Valley and the region’s primary commercial air gateway.
SpaceX’s Starbase facility in adjacent Cameron County is projected to add more than $6.5 billion in economic value to the Rio Grande Valley, according to company estimates cited by the Dallas Fed. The longer-term effect is a broadening of the high-net-worth household base beyond the traditional border-trade profile toward engineering and technology wealth.
Clients in the RGV approach us with the categories common across Texas: steel sports watches — Rolex Daytona and Submariner, Patek Philippe Nautilus and Aquanaut, Audemars Piguet Royal Oak — estate and diamond jewelry, gold coins and bars. The cross-border dimension of this market also brings pieces acquired through Monterrey-based channels; provenance documentation from Mexican dealers or auction houses is handled in the ordinary course.
